Exterior Motion Detector

Business Security, Security

Outdoor lighting is an effective deterrent to night time crime, however keeping lights on all night wastes electricity. Exterior motion detectors that turn on only when motion is exhibited are a cost-effective and energy-efficient way to protect your company or property from break-ins at night.

The tough and durable construction of an outdoor motion sensor distinguishes it from a regular motion detector, allowing it to withstand any inclement weather. A weather-proof and water-resistant design enables an exterior motion sensor to be used in an outdoor environment. This is useful for keeping an eye on what’s going on around your company and ensuring that no unauthorized people are present within a restricted area. These detectors are often made to work in high temperatures, allowing them to work in a variety of situations. So, if you’re in the middle of a snowstorm or enjoying a sunny day, your outdoor motion detector will always work.

How Exterior Motion Detector Works

The unit will activate and initiate a system response if the sensor detects a large amount of motion. An enabled exterior motion detector can sound a siren, dispatch police, switch on the lights, or do something else depending on the sensor’s programming.  To detect motion, most outdoor motion detectors use passive infrared (PIR) technology. This works by detecting the infrared energy that an individual emits. The sensors ‘trip’ when the heat levels rapidly shift, turning on the lights, sounding the alarm, or doing something else the sensors are programmed to do. You may change the sensitivity of the sensor by changing the pulse count, and the detector will respond to a smaller or larger change in infrared energy. The sensor’s sensitivity decreases as the pulse count rises, whereas it rises as the pulse level drops.

Factors to Consider When Installing

There are several factors to consider when installing an outdoor motion detector that will affect the device’s accuracy. The mounting position would be one of the most critical factors to address. The device’s ability to detect motion is primarily determined by the height and angle at which it is placed. Another factor to consider is the type of motion sensor lens that will be used. If a user needs to detect motion over a longer distance, for example, a long range lens would operate over a larger, narrower area. A user can also cover a portion of the lens to limit the region where motion is detected.
